Overview

Overmolding is a specialized injection molding process where a layer of material (typically soft TPE or TPU) is molded over a rigid substrate to create a single integrated part. This process adds soft-touch surfaces, improves grip, provides sealing, and enhances product aesthetics without secondary assembly operations.

๐Ÿ”ง Overmolding Process

Method 1: Two-Shot Overmolding

Completed in a single cycle using a rotary molding machine. The substrate is molded first, then the mold rotates and overmold material is injected. Best for high-volume production with excellent registration.

Method 2: Pick-and-Place Overmolding

Pre-molded substrates are placed into the mold manually or robotically, then overmold material is injected. Suitable for lower volumes or when substrates are metal/existing parts.

Method 3: Manual Insert Overmolding

For prototypes and low volumes, inserts are placed manually before overmolding. Cost-effective for small batches and design validation.
